Ebola outbreak in Mubende, Uganda
On 20th September 2022, the Uganda Ministry of Health (MOH) announced the outbreak of Ebola in Uganda. UVRI, EACCR, ALERRT, The Global Health Network, ACDC and other partners are working on compiling resources to assist rapid responders.

EACCR2 Mid-Term Review Week
EDCTP commissioned an independent evaluation to assess EDCTP Regional Networks’ (NoEs) performance and impact. The EACCR2 is one of the four NoEs, and was evaluated between the 14th and 16th August 2019. The objective of the Mid-term review was to assess the status of the project performance so far, including progress towards agreed deliverables, project management and the likelihood of successful completion.

A 10-day practical course: Strengthening Laboratory capacity for diagnosis of neglected Tropical Diseases
The Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri (PHL-IdC) (http://www.phlidc.org), in Pemba, Zanzibar,United Republic of Tanzania, has been a WHO Collaborating Centre for neglected tropical diseases(NTDs) since 2005. It operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Health, Zanzibar.PHL-IdC’s activities include assisting relevant health programmes to implement disease controlstrategies, undertaking operational research and strengthening capacities of health staff. It alsoprovides the local population with routine services for selected laboratory tests.

EXIT-TB project held a two-day workshop (December 17-18) on data management at the Panama Garden Hotel, Moshi, Tanzania. The training involved participants from the participating institutions; NIMR-Muhimbili and KCRI Tanzania, IDI and MLI Uganda, AAU Ethiopia, IEND Sudan, and KEMRI Kenya.

The 9th EDCTP forum Lisbon Portugal
Every Two years EDCTP organizes a forum for EDCTP funded grants and awardees. The aim is to assess progress with project activities, share best practices and challenges experienced in project implementation. The Forum is rotational in both European and African countries. The 8th EDCTP Forum took place in Zambia – Africa and the just concluded 9th EDCTP forum took place in Lisbon- Portugal on the 17th to 21st September.

Basic Epidemiology and Biostatistics short course a success
The Basic Epidemiology and Biostatistics short course funded by EDCTP through the HIV node of EACCR 2 was held at UVRI Entebbe Uganda, from 20th August to 24th August 2018. The 5-day long course was targeted at young researchers, Medical doctors, laboratory technologists, Masters’ and PhD students who needed the skills in basic epidemiology and biostatistics. There were 24 participants from different EACCR2 member partner countries that is Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya Tanzania and Uganda.

Calling for interests support to management and operations of PHEO centres in response to Ebola outbreak in the DRC
On 8 May, WHO was notified by the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) of two lab-confirmed cases of Ebola Virus Disease(EVD). From 4 April to 17 May 2018, 45 EVD cases have been reported, including in three health care workers, and 25 deaths have been reported. Of these 45 cases, 14 have been confirmed. Most of these cases have been in the remote Bikoro health zone, although one confirmed case is in Mbandaka, a city of 1.2 million, which has implications for its spread. Nine neighbouring countries, including Congo-Brazzaville and Central African Republic, have been advised that they are at high risk of spread and have been supported with equipment and personnel.

Eastern Africa Consortium for Clinical Research-2 (EACCR2) to be Lauched at UVRI
The launch for the Eastern Africa Consortium for Clinical Research-2 (EACCR2) project is scheduled for 24th & 25th January 2018 at Uganda Virus Research Institute main campus. EACCR2, a follow-on project of the EACCR1, is a 3-year capacity building Network comprising of 23 institutions from 6 countries in East Africa and 8 northern partner institutions from 5 northern countries that is funded by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP).
