The launch for the Eastern Africa Consortium for Clinical Research-2 (EACCR2) project is scheduled for 24th & 25th January 2018 at Uganda Virus Research Institute main campus. EACCR2, a follow-on project of the EACCR1, is a 3-year capacity building Network comprising of 23 institutions from 6 countries in East Africa and 8 northern partner institutions from 5 northern countries that is funded by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP).
UVRI hosts the secretariat of the consortium which has five nodes which are hosted in the following institutions:
- HIV Node: Uganda Virus Research Insitute (UVRI)
- Malaria Node: Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI)
- Training Node: Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute (KCRI)
- Tuberculosis Node: National Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) Muhimbili
- Neglected, and Re-Emerging Tropical Diseases Node: University of Khartoum, Sudan.
The Executive director of EDCTP, Dr. Michael Makanga, and the Minister for Health, Dr. Ruth Aceng are expected to attend the launch which will attract both local and international delegates.
EACCR is a partnership of about 23 research and academic institutions in five East African countries (Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, and Ethiopia) and five European countries (United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, and Norway). It is sponsored by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), the Netherlands-African partnership for Capacity development & Clinical interventions Against Poverty (NACCAP), Medical Research Council (MRC)-UK and other development partners. This Network of Excellence is expected to contribute to the accelerated discovery of new or better drugs, vaccines and interventions to control the targeted diseases in East Africa.
