The Basic Epidemiology and Biostatistics short course funded by EDCTP through the HIV node of EACCR 2 was held at UVRI Entebbe Uganda, from 20th August to 24th August 2018. The  5-day long course was targeted at young researchers, Medical doctors, laboratory technologists, Masters’ and PhD students who needed the skills in basic epidemiology and biostatistics. There were 24 participants from different EACCR2 member partner countries that is Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya Tanzania and Uganda.  

The intense short term training programme started was delivered by leading bio-statisticians and epidemiologists in the field. Dr. Benard Kakaire the Project Coordinator EACCR2 HIV node, Dr. Jessica Nakiyingi Miiro from London school of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Dr. Tom Lutalo from UVRI department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Dr. Martin Mbonye from Makerere University and Dr. Fredrick Makumbi from the school of Public Health Uganda. The participants got practical sessions of the STATA software and Other sessions that included Measures of dispersion, measure of central tendency, Analysis of continous variables. analysis of categorical variables, chi-square test and statistical associates. inferential statistics, hypothesis testing and many others.

The training was closed in the presence of Prof. Pontiano Kaleebu the Overall Project coordinator, EACCR2 Nodes and Executive director UVRI who thanked the participants for giving in there time to come and acquire more knowledge and encouraged them to put in practise what ever they have acquired and to get more involved in research, he also thanked the facilitors and all organizers for the success of training. Participants were also represented by Samuel Gurion a Medical Doctor from KENYA/KEMRI-CDC who thanked the facilitors and EACCR2 for giving them an opportunity to participate in the training.

The training was crowned by certificate giving by Prof. Kaleebu and cake cutting to mark the end of the five day sessions.
