The NID node is coordinated by Mr. Erick Muok based at the Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute (KCRI)

In the EDCTP2 programme emphasises the following neglected infectious diseases (NIDs): dengue/severe dengue, rabies, human African sleeping sickness (trypanosomiasis); leishmaniases, cysticercosis/taeniasis, guinea-worm disease (dracunculiasis), echinococcosis foodborne trematodiases, lymphatic filariasis, mycetoma, onchocerciasis (river blindness); schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiases, Buruli ulcer, leprosy (Hansen disease), trachoma, yaws, diarrhoeal infections, lower respiratory infections, as well as emerging infectious diseases of particular relevance for Africa such as Ebola or yellow fever.

The node has different capacity building and research activities involving different diseases Like

1) Ebola- Conduct surveillance, develop GIS maps Ebola treatment, and vaccines; and other clinical trials.

2) Dengue: Measure prevalence and transmission of Dengue, and identification of hot spots.

3) Schistosomiasis: Collection of epidemiological data and Development of GIS maps of endemic areas.

4) Leishmaniasis: Evaluation of new diagnostics and GIS mapping of VL and CL endemic areas.

5) Cysticercosis: Evaluation of new detection tools. Hydatidosis: Measurement of prevalence, epidemiology, genotypes and diagnosis. All these activities involve different partners playing different complimentary roles.
